KEYWORD RESEARCH – Products and services people are searching for

Discover what products and services people want

Imagine you had a superpower.

And your superpower isn’t the ability to jump over buildings or fly over mountaintops, but your superpower was the ability to know what products and services people want.

How cool would that be?

If you are a business person, you could easily use your superpower to know what products and services to sell, instead of investing time and energy in a product that nobody wants to buy.

Or if you are working in an organization, you can use your superpower to impress your boss with the opportunities available in your market, you could even consult for people and show them where to focus their energy and time when starting a business.

The ability to know what people want is a very powerful ability.

In January 2021, I wrote a book on Google Advertising that is being sold globally and in Chapter 4 of the Google Ads Triple Value blueprint, I went into massive detail on How to know what people are searching for, because if you know what people are searching for, then you know what they want.

Hidden in every search term is a desire and a need that wants to be accomplished, and my goal with this blog post is to show you how to discover what people are searching.

These are the excerpts from Chapter 4 of the Google Ads TripleValue Blueprint Enjoy 🙂

Keyword Research

Introduction

In module one, we explained that one of the ways for you to succeed in business is to discover what people want and give it to them.

One of the ways by which we discover what people want is by understanding what they are searching for.

In this section, we are going to talk about how to discover what people are searching for by using Keyword research tools.

There are two basic terminologies that we need to understand before we go further, i.e. Keyword and Search Terms.

A search term is the phrase a customer uses when they go online to search for something, for example, “where to buy a printer online”.

A keyword is what the advertiser bids on for the Google Ads to show to customers, for example the Keyword here can be “Buy Printer Online”, so when anyone types anything related to Buy Printer Online on Google, our advert will show up to them.

The more the search term mirrors the keywords, the more successful an advert will be.

There are quite a number of Keyword research tools available online, but in this section we are going to only focus on 3 that are quite solid for research.

3 Tools for Keyword Research:

Google Keyword Planner
Google.com
Your Intuition and Experience

As you progress on your self development learning journey, you may notice more tools that are also effective for you, but these 3 have done it for me over the past 7 years when it comes down to keyword research.

Mindset and Strategy

In the context of building your business it is important to look at Keywords from the perspective of understanding who your customer is and what they want, It is like a mirror into their soul to discover their deepest desires.

This is not a one time activity that you do once and it ends there, you need to constantly be in research phase everytime, trying to discover what your customers want, what they are searching for, what they are asking for, even when they call into your company to make requests, write down the ones that stand out.

Keyword research is a very important aspect of your business and it’s intent is to help you understand and discover what your clients wants and needs.

Execution

Let’s Proceed with the research of your keywords:

Tool one: Intuition and Experience

Let’s take a case study for a fashion store selling shoes in Lagos, Nigeria.
What would a customer interested in purchasing shoes be searching for online?
They would have phrases like:

  1. Where to buy shoes in lagos
  2. Where to buy quality shoes in Lagos
  3. Fashion store in lagos
  4. Where to buy shoes in bulk for resale
  5. Where to buy shoes online

Anyone that is searching for any of these phrases is most likely interested in buying a shoe from our fashion store.

Class Quiz: Write down Five Phrases your customers would use in Google to search for your product

Tool two: Google.com

Now, we want to take it one step further, to do this we would head over to Google.com and search for things related to our Keyword, such as “where to buy shoes online in lagos”

Scroll to the end of the search results, and you would notice searches related section:

All these related searches are keywords that we can use in our advertising, so you can include the relevant ones and store them in a Keyword Excel File.

Here is my Keyword List so far:

Where to buy shoes in lagos
Where to buy quality shoes in Lagos
Fashion store in lagos
Where to buy shoes in bulk for resale
Where to buy shoes online
Where to buy cheap shoes online
Buy shoe online
Where to buy shoes in bulk for resale in lagos island
Shoes in balogun market
Slippers and sandals in Lagos

Class Quiz: Write down ten keywords from both Intuition and Google.com

Google Keyword Planner

Head over to ads.google.com and click on Tools and settings and then click on Keyword Planner as seen below in steps 1 and 2.

Click on “Discover new Keywords” and then we can add some of our Keywords into the search bar.

After you’ve added a keyword just press enter to add another one.

Once you’re done adding about 5 keywords or more, you can click Get results and it would bring out list of results for you:

Click on the Avg. monthly searches to see it in descending order:

As you can see above, the keyword “where to buy shoes in bulk for resale in lagos island” has between 100 – 1000 searches monthly, which is quite high. What this means is that on an average there are 100 – 1000 people searching for “Where to buy shoes in bulk for resale in Lagos Island”

Don’t be too concerned about the average monthly searches, if it looks high or low, at the end of the day, it is when we advertise that we would have the true picture of which of the keywords are the best performing and which are not performing at all.

You can add some of the Keyword ideas to your Keyword list, I have added another 3 more, which makes it all:

Where to buy shoes in lagos
Where to buy quality shoes in Lagos
Fashion store in lagos
Where to buy shoes in bulk for resale
Where to buy shoes online
Where to buy cheap shoes online
Buy shoe online
Where to buy shoes in bulk for resale in lagos island
Shoes in balogun market
Slippers and sandals in Lagos
Where to buy nike shoes online
Where to buy cheap mens shoes online
Where can I buy shoes online

Class Quiz: Write down fifteen keywords from Intuition, Google.com and Google Keyword Planner

Now that we have our list of keywords and we know what people are searching for on a monthly basis, we can then proceed to create adverts that will show up to these people when they start searching for shoes.

Pro tip: When doing your keyword research you can also check your competitors landing pages and adverts to see which keywords are prevalent, if they are advertising on those keywords it means that it must be profitable with a good Earnings Per Click and so you want to also get in on that action.
